A Credit Downgrade on Edison's Books Could Reach Your Bill
What the Stalled Wildfire Fund Deal Means for SCE Homeowners
A credit rating sounds like something that only matters on Wall Street. For SCE customers, it may matter at the mailbox. Here is the short version of what happened, and why it is worth knowing about.
What stalled in Sacramento
California lawmakers adjourned in September without voting on a wildfire reform plan backed by the governor and the state's big utilities, according to Bloomberg reporting published by Insurance Journal. Soon after, Fitch Ratings moved its outlook on Edison International and SCE to "negative" from "stable," citing the stalled effort.
Why a rating can touch your bill
A lower credit rating generally means higher borrowing costs. Edison's CEO has said the cost of debt is passed through to customers, as reported by Solar.com. He has also warned that customers could face "hundreds of millions of dollars" in added costs if SCE were downgraded to junk status. That figure is the utility's own claim, and no one has put a dollar amount on an individual household's bill.
The fund at the center of it
The state wildfire fund limits how much shareholders pay when utility equipment sparks a fire. For Edison, that cap is about $4.3 billion, but it only applies while the fund still has money. Edison wants a permanent cap. A special legislative session before year-end is still described as a possibility.
What this means for you
Nothing on your bill changes today because of this. But it is one more reminder that utility costs tend to land on customers, whether the cause is wildfire liability, aging equipment or borrowing. The one part of your energy costs you can control is how much you buy from the grid. Solar and a battery reduce that.
How third-party ownership (TPO) works
In a TPO program, a company installs, owns and maintains the solar and battery system at your home. You pay for the power it produces without buying, leasing, or financing equipment. Many programs are designed to come in below utility rates, with savings of up to 40% depending on your home and program.
Here is what a TPO solar and battery program can offer SCE homeowners:
-Less power bought from the grid at rising rates
-Stored solar for the pricey 4 to 9 p.m. window
-Backup power when the grid goes down
