On August 11, a violent storm with 99-mph winds — hurricane-force tore through northwest Indiana. It knocked out power to more than 300,000 homes and businesses, the largest outage in the local utility's history.

More than a week later, tens of thousands of families were still in the dark, lining up at community centers for hot meals and a place to charge their phones. Full restoration wasn't expected until August 25, a full two weeks after the storm.

Two weeks. No refrigerator. No air conditioning in the August heat. No medical equipment. No work-from-home.

And here's the uncomfortable truth: what happened in Gary isn't a freak event. It's a preview.

The Grid Is Older Than You Think

The utility in Indiana had to replace roughly 300 power poles and 44 transmission poles just to get one city back online. "These aren't simple repairs," one utility executive admitted. "These are systems that are being rebuilt."
