Google Just Signed a Deal for the Largest Solar Project in the US — Enough to Power 315,000 Homes
Construction has begun on Steel River Energy Center in Wilson, Arkansas, which is set to become the largest solar project ever built in the United States. When complete in 2029, the project developed by Cypress Creek Energy will total 2.5 gigawatts of solar generation paired with 2.9 gigawatt-hours of battery energy storage — a combination large enough to power an estimated 315,000 Arkansas homes. Google has signed a power purchase agreement for the majority of the electricity generated by the project's first two phases, which alone represent 1.6 gigawatts of solar and 1.9 gigawatt-hours of storage and are already under construction. "Steel River not only represents an important investment in Google's clean energy commitments, but also in our commitment to Arkansas," said Will Conkling, Google's head of data center energy. Google is currently building a data center in West Memphis, roughly 40 miles south of the Steel River site, and the project is expected to help supply that facility along with the broader regional grid.
Built With Domestic Manufacturing
One notable feature of the project is its supply chain. Cypress Creek says the majority of the steel used for solar racking and foundations is sourced from two Arkansas steel plants, and the project uses Nextpower solar trackers, First Solar modules, and LG Energy Solution battery storage — all manufactured or assembled domestically.
"Some people still question whether a domestic solar supply chain is possible. This project is proof," said Cypress Creek CEO Kevin Smith. "Steel River is the largest solar project with energy storage in the country, and it's being built with 100% U.S.-made solar panels and structural steel."
Part of a Larger Pattern
Steel River is the latest in a series of major solar commitments from Google. Since November, the company has also signed a power purchase agreement for a 49-megawatt solar project in Ohio, acquired renewable energy developer Intersect for nearly $5 billion, and signed additional agreements for roughly 400 megawatts of solar under construction in Texas. Like Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft, Google's aggressive solar buying is driven by the enormous and growing power demands of AI infrastructure and data centers, combined with the value of locking in electricity costs through long-term contracts rather than remaining exposed to volatile wholesale power markets.
What It Means Closer to Home
The scale of a project like Steel River — enough power for 315,000 homes — is a useful reminder of just how much electricity demand is being added to the grid by data centers and AI infrastructure nationwide. As that demand grows, it puts additional pressure on grid capacity and, over time, on the rates utilities charge everyone else. The same solar-plus-battery combination behind Steel River is available at home scale too. Pairing rooftop solar with a battery lets homeowners generate and store their own power, reducing dependence on a grid that's under growing strain from exactly the kind of massive AI energy demand driving projects like this one.
